My Skaven Army – Clan Rat Unit A

I have a list of what is planned for my Skaven Army, atleast so I have a good size force to choose from if I ever get much chance. And I wanna paint some things ^_^

Among this is of course, a number of Clan Rats. Clan Rats are the basic Skaven infantry unit. Basic armour, basic weapons. They are picked from either the own clan who are in the battle, or hired from other clans to aid in whatever goal will be achieved. As such they all have a very basic profile and stat line in 4ed.

Unit size can vary and at first I was going to use 20 in a unit. Fair enough number.. However.. I made a slight mistake (which isn’t hugely important) and when I got a bunch of Movement trays, I didn’t noticed they were for 25mm bases, not 20 which is standard.. so I upped the unit size to 30. Just means more rats to paint up.

This first unit was probably the most basic of them. Many of the figures are plastic ones, with a Metal Standard and a Metal Champion, as well as a leader (who isn’t really any different then anyone else).

The Champion, I named Skarr Bladefell (3rd from Left), and the Leader is Snarker Blōddragan. (2nd from Right.. can’t see him here due to the Banner). The Banner, by the way, is from the 3ed Rule book I believe, with the old Skaven slogan ‘We shall Inherit’. It was printed onto some Cloth and then made ragged.

Skarr and Snarker are a Ral Patha Rat Man by Tim Prow and the Standard is a Citadel (C47 Fleer)

The Rest of the unit is mostly a Mixture of 4ed Plastic Clan Rats, AHQ plastic clan rats and some 3ed ‘Fantasy Regiment’ clan rats.

Now, some people should know this, Being that AHQ (Advanced Hero Quest) was NOT a army game, buy a skirmish dungeon crawler, the Figures were not designed to rank up like this. when they made the 4ed Skaven plastics, they kinda tweaked this a bit but not greatly, though they are FAR better and will rank up with themselves pretty well. In order to get the AHQ ones to rank well, one of the standard options is to use them on the front rank and the sides, thus there swords and whatever the other blades which aren’t quite swords but not greatly different are, don’t poke into each other. Another method and you can’t clearly see him in this (he is just behind the Standard) is to adjust how they stand on the base. The one behind the standard has one foot raised as he is standing on a small rock on that one foot. This gives him a small amount of height, but it’s enough that his sword is clearing most of the figures. There are also some other methods dealing with being creative in the angles the figure is on the base and ranking them next to figures which give the most space, but this is fine.

Oh and another note, because of how the… shields were a bit odd in a way with AHQ, the shields are odd.. (Seriously, I think idea with AHQ Skaven shields was to use them as proxies for different skaven type, which is why they have Clan Eshin shields on some of them. But since Skaven are meant to take alot of there clothes and stuff from what they steal and take from the battle fields, it’s fine ^_^

Clan Rats are 6 points a piece, plus double value for the standard, putting this unit to 180pts because you don’t include the Champion. The Champion comes out of the Characters points, which he costs 27 + 6 points for his light armour and hand weapon and shield which is required to put him equal to his unit. That makes this unit 213pts in total.

Running Total:

Characters: 33pts
War Machines: 0pts
Monsters: 0pts
Regiments: 311pts
Total Army Points painted up: 344pts
