It is often seen as a children’s show due to the paper craft style of the graphics but this is kinda far from the truth.

The first series, referred to by fans as ‘First Guest’ was 26 episodes taking about 2-3 minutes each which tell the story of an unknown and unseen male guest at the Gregory House hotel. Unsure how he got there, he is met by the seemingly owner of the hotel, Gregory. Over the course of the show, more guests are met and you start to find out kinda why he is there.

The Second series takes place some time later when a second guest shows up. This series was named ‘Second Guest’ which is why fans refer to the first one was ‘First Guest’. This second guest is female and is in the same starting situation of not knowing why there are there or what to do as they meet various guests of the hotel.

The third series ‘The Last Train’ shows Gregory being fed up with his lot in life and trying to escape, only to find it’s not so easy as he thinks.

There was also a short series of ‘Gregory Gallery’ which is basically Gregory showing the viewer around a gallery which shows the other characters and kinda tells the story of the first series. I’m not sure but this kinda seams like a demo to sell the series.. not sure. There was also a short spin-off series ‘Bloody Karte’ (which means roughly Bloody Casefile’ which shows the life of Nurse Catherine in her daily life in the Gregory House hospital. It’s.. unknown what its direct relation is to the other series as it’s the one that doesn’t fit story wise.

Alot of the information you find online on this series and the characters is often just fan theory or mistaken translation which makes things confusing…

There was also a couple of video games, a PS2 one which was pretty good but the cutscenes were just reused from the first two series to tell kinda the same story from the second series. This game WAS translated outside of Japan but due to a different translator from the series, a number of things were translated differently. There was also a couple of mobile phone games which were never translated outside of Japan. There was a third party Comic made (as in, not Naomi Iwata) which had a very less papercraft style and was… so-so, with major changes and… never officially translated. A few years back Naomi Iwata tried to bring the series back but without the paper craft art style and.. I can’t say I was a fan of that. Oh well, whatever he thinks is best I guess.

Naomi Iwata went on to do a couple of other series in the same style… Oh what.. I’ve been through all this and haven’t even got to why it’s on this site?… well…

My custom designed and Laser cut Storage Box based on the Hotel itself

For some reason in about 2002, Upper Deck in the USA got the rights and did a “Gregory Horror Show: Collectable game Experience” game. You brought a base set which came with the game, a pre-painted miniature of Gregory himself (and 4 generics tokens for the players) and they also released what would be called blind boxes which each had 2 miniatures in them and you didn’t know who was in the boxes. I don’t think this game sold very well and while the base set is pretty cheap-ish and easy to find, getting the various miniatures (or even just the blindboxes unopened) is a pain due to them being either hard to find them or bloody pricey. In fact, one of the miniatures is believed to have only been released at some special events… and is soo rare many doubt it was ever released (but it was. I haven’t seen it in the wild myself… but I have seen enough examples to say it had some form of release). These were NEVER released in the UK.. I had to pay import and have a Cousin in the USA help out to get what I have, I have seen photos of it from the wild).

So.. lets go over the game. It’s pretty fun and basic.

The Basic objective of the game is for the players to be the first player to take control of three of the hotels rooms and then escape the house alive. The game is for 2 – 4 players and the game board (paper mat) is divided into 2 floors. While your goal is to take three rooms, there are 2 different ways to win. One is to do that as stated, but the other is for your foes to have their life points reduced to 0 while you are still alive. IF you are the last one standing, you win ^_^

You start at the hotel entrance and this is where you need to reach in order to exit. Movement around the board is done by rolling a 20 sided dice but. that doesn’t quite tell you how many squares to move. If you roll 1-5, you move 2 squares. if 6-10, you move 3, if 11-15, you move 4 and 16-20 moves you 5. The fact of it being a D 20… doesn’t really come into play much. You can also choose to split your movement in any way you want with any amount of monsters in play which have slightly different movement rules (they can’t use stairs, use portals, enter hotel rooms or enter Hell! yes, you can be sent to hell and have to get out). If a Roaming Monster lands on the same space as a player, the player needs to battle them in a simpler way as in a hotel room which I’ll deal with later.

Each Unique figure I have 23 out of the 26 released. They are about 23mm tall on average

As you move around the board there are a few squares which give effects like powering up your ‘spooky strength’. Spooky Strength is important because this is what you use to defeat monsters and take over rooms. You are not allowed to visit the same Spooky strength repeatedly and you need to visit another power up square or a hotel room before you can revisit that square. The other type of Power up square is the Judgement Power Up square. When you land on it, you draw a Judgement card and you may have the maximum of 5 cards in your hand. The Judgement cards give your various things like giving you a speed power up, or helping you take control of a room. There are also the Roaming Monster Start spaces, which is where Gregory starts (the player who goes last gets to pick which of the two spaces he starts on) and when a roaming monster is defeated, they go to one of these spaces. Unless you have a full hand, you must stop when you land on a power up space. If you have any remaining movement points, you can use these on Monsters (I’ll say about them later).

Now, each hotel room is locked and you need a key to open it. you get this by passing (don’t need to stop) on a Skeleton Key space but you can only have one key at a time unless you have a judgement card or a game effect which allows more then one. The main game effects are the Mystery Room cards. When you enter the key-less Mystery room, you flip over the top card and it gives a special effect. Some are one-offs, others are ‘lingering effect’ which remain active until another card is drawn. When this deck has been all used up, you then get access to the room itself which is full of power ups. There are also Thorn squares which you lost 50 life points when you land on or pass through, Rugs where you may discard a judgement card from your hand (sometimes you don’t want a card in your hand, so this is a good way to get rid of them) and there are a few other basic spaces like the stairs which go from the ground floor to upstairs. Each hotel room also contains a Room Control space. this is just where you put your token to show you have control of this room.

Now, when you enter a room, you have to fight the Monster inside to gain control of it. TO do this, you flip over a Monster card and that shows who you will be fighting. The Monster card has a character name, a ‘Feral Icon’ (which I’ll get to much later), Feral Activator (again, later), Spooky Strength and special rules. The Spooky strength is how strong that monster is. So if you draw, say the Cactus Gunman, he has a spooky strength of 450. If you have more then 450 Spooky Strength (which starts the game at 250, and can go up to 600) you defeat that monster and reduce your spooky strength by that amount but add there spooky strength to your health as you eat them. The special effect will then say to roll a dice and depending on the outcome, you will get a different effect (like add back spooky strength, or move a monster) and you get to put a token on the control space to say you own that room. Though just because someone else has control of a room, doesn’t mean you can’t steal it from them. while you can re-enter a room you own without a key, a rival will need a key and they can enter the room and try to defeat the monster inside to steal that room to their side. There are about 13 rooms in the hotel I believe so if you have 4 players, there isn’t really much need to steal rooms, though some are easier to get to then others and owning that room can be a bonus for you. If you fight a roaming monster (Gregory) you roll the die, see what number that means on the movement chart and add 00 to the end of it. So if you roll a 13, that’s 4 spaces, giving the spooky strength of 400. yikes. If you lost to a roaming monster, you do the same as normal but have to move your player piece to any open space on the second floor. If you win, you don’t get any life points but it sends the roaming monster to a free starting space. You are not allowed to attack a roaming monster, or another player, but the roaming monsters will try to attack you. How this is done is if you a defeated by a monster when attacking them, or you tie with them, the monster stays in the room. You don’t loose any Spooky strength but you reduce your health by the monsters strength and must leave the hotel as soon as possible.

Judgement Boy from Series 1

Now. where do the extra miniatures come into this? Well… There is an advanced mode! When you enter a room and release the guest, IF you are playing hard mode, and a player has that miniature, it can then be let loose into the world to wonder about! There are two ways to add these monsters (referred to as Feral Monsters) into the game. When you lose a room battle, check with the player on the left if they have the monster on the card or one shown on the side of the card in the feral indicator area (a main monster can show up to 2 other monsters on the card). If the player does own one, that monster is now placed in the game (with some rules like there can’t be 2 of the same monster in play at the same time, you must have NOT have defeated that monster if you are the one adding it to the game, no more then 4 feral monsters in play at a time etc) and the Feral monsters act alot like the roaming monster but they have special abilities as the feral icons.

They can also be introduced when you have a Shade deal. Basically, on your turn if you have less then 2 feral monsters in play and some other rules much the same as above, you can play 100 of your life points to summon a monster from your deck to the hotel. But the monster goes to a Monster Trap space, where you need to land on a trigger space and roll the required number to release it. This is about the only time a D20 makes sense as one trap require 5 or less to free, and the other requires 10 or less.. so either way, you have no more then a 50-50 chance to let loose a monster this way. While they are like Roaming monsters, they have some slight differences like they CAN go up stairs and a few other things.

There is also the ONLY comment in the WHOLE game (really) which makes one major important statement.. “Future Gregory Horror Expansions will provide additional Monster Cards for the remaining Miniatures”. Nope. there were only 48 Monster Cards, which is 4 of each of 12 monsters. Not counting Gregory, there were 25 miniatures releases. while some monsters have the other ones connected to it (the Cactus Gunman has Cactus Girl in it’s Feral Activator), booster packs never came with cards for these monsters to have special abilities like the others but this is again, sometimes I’ll come to a bit later. If you want to get a Feral monster out of the game, they can fight each other as while all players can MOVE a feral monster, only it’s owner can attack with it but unlike Gregory who re-spawns, the Feral monster is taken out if it loses a battle. There is also a rule to Sacrifice a feral monster where it acts… like a bomb and takes out any monsters within 3 spaces of it, dealing damage to the monsters owner. Once a monster is taken out, that player can’t use the same monster again, but if another player has that monster, they can play it.

Now.. I might have made the rules appear more complex then they are.. Sorry, and it’s not like I’m gonna just scan and repost the whole 40+ page rule book. But the rules aren’t as complex as they seam, though they aren’t the most simple ‘aimed at kids’ game. In fact, the guy that wrote the rules is Kris Oprisko, who is a writer who did alot for Wildstorm (a comics company), wrote many tie-in books and comics for the Metal Gear Solid series (a not fantastic sequel to the old Metal Gear games), CSI series, Resident Evil and Transformers. He also worked on Upper Decks CardCaptors trading card game which I have (but was only able to get the starter and a couple of booster packs). He also has a bit of a history in the field of writing card games and stuff. Can’t say I think he is the best but he is a fairly solid writer/designer guy.

The Miniatures themselves are plastic and pre-paintined, not the best in the world but since the papercraft style does have them as basic blocks with texturing, this work pretty well and they do look pretty good for the size.

I kinda got the feeling they wanted to do a series two however. why? Well.. the character which they picked.

Gregory – You got him with the starter set so the most common figure.
Black Duck 2 – One of the two Black ducks who operated the Speed Mouse rollercoaster in Series 1, with a minor appearance inside some nuts in Series 3. A common figure but they only did Black Duck 2.. the difference between the two is just the colour of their uniform visually. The fact he was clearly 2, does highly hint that they were going to do a Series 2 repaint version
Mummy Dog – Mummy Dog is a Mummy of a Dog and another Common figure. He appears all three series and in the first two, he is with his father, and in the third there is a brief appearance of his mother. The running thing with him and his father is they are always feeling unwell, or atleast claiming they are, and don’t seam to notice the large weapons embedded in their heads, complete with dripping blood.

Lost Doll – Ohh I like Lost Doll.. one of my favourite characters (we will come to my Fav later) and a common figure. Lost Doll is a little girl who had her cruel parents throw away her prized doll, who was her closest friend.. She looks a bit doll like herself and her doll (named Katie in the third series) is in fact on Lost Doll’s back! or atleast her head is. Forever looking for a doll she can’t find because she and the doll are one. She also has a thing about not liking to be too close to someone.
Egypetit – This common Egyptian sarcophagus. He only appears in the third series where, after some help, he wants to release his master from inside to reek havoc on the world.. but it’s been quite some time and well.. corpses have a habit of rotting.
Fat Chicken – Another common from Series 3, Fat Chicken got a great job where all he has to do is eat all day and get fatter and fatter, and then, a christmas, children love him as they will put him on tray in the centre of the table.. Basically, his job is to be fatten up and eaten but he doesn’t seam to put two and two together, and just greedily eats.
Umbaba – Umbaba is.. weird. Another common figure, he likes to dance but his dance causes people who see it to copy until they dance themselves to death. A small-ish character in series 2.
Musha Dokuro – An unknown Samurai who is looking for a master and anyone they find becomes his master. He only appeared in Series 3 where there were a few of him in the end.
Neko Zombie- One of the most popular characters and a Rare figure (soo happy to have this one). Neko Zombie (meaning Cat Zombie and funnily, the English name is often given as Cat Zombie in Japanese stuff, but they didn’t translate his name outside of Japan). Said to be a next door neighbour’s cat who was beautiful until one day, someone went to them with a sewing kit and sewed everything shut. Greogry REALLY hates (and is implied to be the one who did it) Neko Zombie (they never explain how his fur colour changed.. just claimed it was one colour and after everything was sewn shut, its’ clearly a different colour) and mostly has him chained up in a cell like room. Neko Zombie is kinda the only character who is REALLY helpful to the ‘viewer’ guest. Though like many characters, the true role of Neko Zombie in the hotel is… unclear.
Devil Dog – Ah.. much less seen form of Angel Dog. Angel/Devil Dog is basically a dog that appears to try to help the guest in series 1 but.. If their help does Help or Hinder, depends on their mood that day.. Maybe they want to be an Angel, or maybe a Devil! Its a common figures and another weird thing in that they only did Devil Dog, and not the more often seen Angel Dog.
Dead Body- Ah, the Dead Bodies. there are a bunch of them, all looking the same and they are just rotting corpses. They don’t like the fact that they are trapped in bodies soo rotten that they are blown into dust with the slightest breeze and are often on the hunt for a new body. This are very much zombie like characters (in fact, some sources just call them Zombie in English, yet the Japanese name more means.. Dried Corpse.. so.. who knows the real name since all three are stated in official material) and also a common figure.
Cactus Gunman – the first Uncommon figure, Cactus Gunman is a .. Mexican-like Outlaw who is a very bad shot. In the first series, he challenges the guest to a duel claiming they have unfinished business, but ends up missing and hitting Gregory instead. In the Second series, he falls head over heels in love with the female guest and has to help them out when they meet his sister.
Catherine – Catherine is … a Nurse who appears to have a sexual attraction to drawing peoples blood and just can’t help herself, often carrying a very oversized syringe. Another Uncommon figure in the series and not only appears in all 3 series, but is the star of the spin-off series.
Mummy Papa – Uncommon and the father of Mummy Dog. While no name was given, the paper craft file lists his wife as Mummy Mammy.
Dr. Fritz – Only appearing in the Bloody Karte spin-off, Dr. Fritz is a very nervous Doctor of the hotel and a common figure in this set.
Bonsai Kabuki – A Kabuki actor who is a Bonsai tree. This is a Common figure and they have the ability to see into the hearts of whoever they look into. First appears in series 2 where he sees some very naughty things in the Female guests heart.

Cactus Girl – Another Favourite of mine (I think on my top 4), Cactus girl is a common figure who first appears in Series 2 as the younger Sister of the Cactus Gunman and isn’t very happy that the female guest doesn’t want to date her big brother, to a point that she tries to kill Gregory unless she goes out with him. She also has a role in the 3rd series where she and her brother have to run away because of her brother’s lack of aim with a gun, and has a fairly major role in half of the Bloody Carte series.
Hell’s Chief – A kinda Candle Golam, Hell’s chief lives to cook food for the guests. He hates cigarettes as smoking dulls the palette and also does not like to be argued with. He appears all three series, with a bit more major part in series 2 where his candle light has to be put out in order to stop him trying to kill the guest for smoking. An uncommon figure.
Bonehead – Professor Bonehead was a professor trying to find the skeleton remains of the rainbow Dragon, however, he was at it soo long his wife died and by the looks of him, maybe him too. He only appears in series 3 where he finds the dragon, and his wife appears to get revenge on him for leaving her to die.
Death – Death is.. Death. a Common figure and a very major and kinda ‘good guy’ character. Death’s job is to take the lost souls who have wandered enough to the afterlife and does in fact help out the guest in the first two series and is kinda the main one giving you the quest and helping you in the video game. If you need to ask why Death has as Swedish flag on his hat, you really aren’t gonna understand alot of the references in this series. Of course Death should be Swedish!
Prompter – the Prompter is one of a series of Prompters. They wear black with a black face mask, which is the common outfit worn by old time prompters and assistances in Japanese theatre, so you don’t see them standing out. A common figure and all the prompters are the same and don’t really have a character, but are seen to sort things out, move stuff around etc.
Frog Fortune Teller – The Frog Fortune Teller is just that. She tells the Future and is never wrong, and doesn’t really care too much if it’s good or bad, she is kind a fatalist who is happy when her outcomes are true, which they always are. a Common figure in the set.
Trap Mouse – Trap Mouse kinda has 2 different characters. First appearing in series 2, Trap Mouse is a machine which is like a Mouse Trap. It homes in on a transmitter and uses it’s large metal trap claws on it’s head to trap people and chop them up. In series 3, there are 2 different trap mice (only differences is the accent colour for the eyes is Red on one and Blue on the other) who are best friends but can’t sit next to each other, cause their instincts to destroy with their traps will take over.. But then they are convinced that there friendship is far stronger then Instincts!.. or maybe not. A common figure.
Sleepy Sheep – Sleepy Sheep is kinda neutral character who wants to help the guest fall asleep, but instead falls asleep themselves.. and then sleep talks.. often what is in the mind of the guest. Appears to mean well but might not be all they seam. Another Common figure and appeared in series 2 and 3.
Toilet Baby – Yeah.. Toilet Baby is a little .. baby (who’s head has a Toilet Roll) who pulls the chain on the toilet they sit on and gets flushed down it. They call for help but.. not always a great idea as they love getting flushed and you are just gonna end up with them. Only appeared in Series 1.
Mono-eye Wizard – Leader of a cult trying to bring the dead back to life, but always failing. Mono-eye wizard is REALLY rare.. as in the one I said above some people don’t believe was ever released. A pretty minor character who only appeared a little bit in series 2 so.. odd choice.

Now.. that’s the 26 figures they released but it’s a very odd choice. While you have alot of main characters, you also are missing a fair amount of characters, both main and minor. While all the cards for the characters came with the starter set (not with the minis themselves), I could really see a Series 2 being planned which came with cards for new characters.. Really, there aren’t TOO many characters in the world of Gregory horror but there is clearly enough for series 2 and what didn’t we have?

Judgement Boy – Judgement Boy is a very MAJOR character, and while they kinda appear as ‘Judgement cards’, the character could appear. Their role was to appear and ask whoever a question. They would answer and he will uses his scales to see if they were being truthful or not. Often the person didn’t want to admit what is really in their heart (like asked Gregory if his mother and a piece of cheese were falling off a cliff to their doom, which one would they save?). While it’s bit hard to say, Series 1 has Judgement Boy, in Series 2, there was Judgement Boy GOLD, which was judgement Boy covered in gold, who lead a group of Judgement boys in training. I kinda think the original one upgraded and then got some new ones to train up.
Clock Master & My Son – The Clock Master and his son, named “My Son”, are fairly major in all three series. the Clock Master is the master of time and can turn back the clock to the past to help undo the wrong which was done.. However, he is getting on a bit and not as good as he used to be.

Public phone having been caught trying to con Gregory out of Money from Series 3

TV Fish – A floating Ghost like Fish with a TV for a head which can show the guest images from their own memory, which get hazier and hazier the longer the guest is in the hotel. They also can show images from a special video camera. They do seam to float around randomly without a mind of their own though. Appears in the first two series.
Public Phone – The Public Phone is.. a bit of a nasty work. You try to use the phone and it keeps asking for more money. OF course, the problem is the Hotel doesn’t HAVE a public phone. It’s just a guest who looks like a phone and wants to make money of you. Appears in Series 2 and 3.
James – Gregory’s Nephew James. He seams nice but is quite full of mischief.. problem is, it’s hard to tell if he is having ‘innocent fun’, or is fully aware of what he is doing. Appears in series 2 and 3.

Roulette Boy – My Favourite Character! I love Roulette Boy! They love games and when you end up with them, you are forced to play there game and Spin his Spinner! problem is, there is nothing made up about the dangers you face when landing on squares like “Bomb” or “Flood”.. the only way to exit the game is to carry on playing and try to survive. But really, Roulette Boy doesn’t mean any harm, Just wants to have fun and play games!… Maybe some reason he is my Favourite. Appears in Series 1 and Series 3.
Black Duck 1 – Like I said earlier.. they released Black Duck 2 but Black Duck 1 is just a palette swap. Easy to release this one.
Mirror Man – Very hard to define this character.. Called the Mirror of Truth, yet it’s real name is Mirror Man, they reflect the real you, but when the guest didn’t like what they saw, they smashed the mirror, showing blood and an eye looking through the Glass. Basically appears as a Character in series 1, and more as an object in series 3
Angel Dog – The ‘Good’ Side of Devil Dog. Why release one and not the other? no clue.
Gregory Mama – Ohh.. kinda the real Horror behind the Hotel. Gregory’s Mama kinda has two character designs. Mostly she has white/grey hair, but official paper craft model has red/brown hair. She wants lost souls to eat as she thinks they keep her young, but she appears to be anything but young and kinda the ‘main villain’ if you can all anyone that. In the video game, she does in fact act as a boss fight. She appears in all 3 series and pretty much EVERY one is afraid of her. Apart from James who doesn’t really care much.
Kinko & Inko – Now here is a joke which doesn’t translate. Kinko is a Metal safe which appears in series 1. He is sleepy and doesn’t let anyone open him up without his say so. Inko is a Parakeet who is the friend of Inko and sits on top of him. What a Parrot on a Safe? well, it’s cause Inko is the Japanese for Parakeet, and Kinko is the Japanese for Safe. So it’s a play on words as there is only one letter differences. However, unless you know that and their names, like many characters, they aren’t named in any episodes and you get no clue what a Parakeet is doing on top a safe. They are fairly major in series 1 but only appear 2 episodes.
The Haniwa Businessman – Basically.. this is what the first guest ends up as. the Haniwa Businessman technically appears in all three series and is.. well.. a Haniwa statue as a business man and only really cares about business..
Poor Conductor – Appearing in series 2 and 3, the Poor Conductor just wants to get people to listen to his old time music but he is old and worn out and people just aren’t interested these days, which leads him to act out.
SalesBoy – A zombie like Beaver who works on the train, or the station in series 3 and sells peanuts. Appears a few times in the series with a choice between two types of Peanut. Genetically modified or radioactive. Which would you pick?
Pig Gentleman – Only appearing in series 3, the Pig Gentleman has a bit of a fight with the Chief. He thinks his Beef isn’t cooked right. after not stepping down, he confronts the chief. Next thing you see, the Chief is serving Pork.

There are technically a couple other you could push in if you had to, in fact there are 4 characters who you can download the paper craft for which were planned but never appeared in the show, and a female Neko Zombie. They SOOO could have done series 2 of these figures (there are also the two player characters from the video game. The boy design also appeared in one of the released paper craft books and his design was then used on the mobile game, where the girl design wasn’t used but a new girl design appeared in the mobile game. We could also argue about the Second guest. At the end of Series 2, the second guest (female) appears to have turned into a Mouse character, like Gregory and his family. we don’t directly see them but we see the shadow. In the Ps2 game, there is a pin-up that Gregory has of a Female Mouse which is sometimes believed MAY be the same one but it’s unknown.

Quality control isn’t the highest but for the size and price range, fair enough. Each of these copies of Lost Doll has a bit of mold line on the head, and some paint can be a bit iffy but the third gets the worse treatment with a slightly dirty face, missing blue ribbons on her hair and no mouth line

The DVDs for this show is very hard and pricey to get these days, and the expansions for his miniature game are probably harder. You sometimes seen collections of the mini figures for sale in the USA, and some larger scale figures were made of some of the characters (as well as characters from one of the other shows that Naomi Iwata made. But while kinda basic, this miniature game works really well, the expansions are 100% optional just to make a ‘hard mode’ but also are pretty nice little miniatures of the characters. Of the set.. I’ve missing 3. I don’t have Cactus Gunman, Catherine or the Mono-eye wizard. While I don’t expect to ever get the wizard, I would like the other two.. Both are uncommon figures. I do have doubles of course, and the way the game works, that’s 100% fine. When a monster is meant to ‘spawn’, you ask the player on the left if they have the monster. If they do, they can spawn it, If they don’t, go to the next player. So while each player can’t have more then one of each monster, you can happily have four of each monster so that each player has one ^_^. Oh and Toilet Baby appears to be the most common figure.. atleast out of the packs I’ve been able to get.

While I don’t really think it’s worth it, you can sometimes find an unopened pack of 2 minis for £14… but then add another £14 for shipping… yikes..

Well….
