Let’s just get that straight. However, Many Board games have been turned into Video games in the past (and a bit later, visa versa). Some were pretty on model, others much less so. And technically there were some which were only video games… I’m not sure if I’ll deal too much with them.

Anyway.. I’d decided to record one playing the First mission (sigh.. I do refer to it in the Video intro as Mission 1, which makes sense, but then comment that technically it’s mission 4 due to weird naming. I kinda make a couple of mistakes, I was a bit more tired then I thought but oh well.

Maybe I’ll do more of Space Crusade in the future if people want, or might more just take a look at different ones.

Anyway, this is Mission 653/04-Sector 45, “Seek and Destroy”. Or as the original Mission Book calls it, Mission 547/2-Sector 57, “Seek and Destroy”… Atleast they renamed the Vessel correctly but… mm.. Okay, I’ll do something weird.. I’ll link to the video here, and under it I’ll add a couple more notes I want to make which I couldn’t put into the video. Can you read it now or wait till after the video ^_^

Okay, back now?

In the Original Space Crusade Mission book (I should have a second copy to see if they did change it at any point) the first mission was Seek and Destroy but the fluff changed. This is probably true with the others as part of the converting but I would have to do a more break down then I’m doing here or in a video…

In the original Mission one, apart from the name change it says the following for the story/fluff:

“Beta Squad, Alpha Company, has been wiped out by a Dreadnought aboard Alien Vessel 547, Code-name Abomination, whilst trying to clear the Sector. You must seek out the dreadnought and destroy it”

Where the video game version:

“Seek and Destroy Dreadnought aboard Alien Vessel 653. The Aliens have blocked some corridors with rubble. Clear rubble with Weapon Hit of one or above.”

Now, part of that is to give more player information (like how to deal with rubble) and the real story has been very shortened. But really, On screen wise, there is room for the original story. Space wise? mm.. Hard to say.. Space Crusade was released for the Atari ST as two discs. They would have been on single sided discs to make them more compatible so you are looking at around 800k discs. Checking the files I have.. yeah.. they take up about that. So they might not have had enough storage space to have the full mission information. Shame but not a huge huge lose. Most 3 1/2″ floppy disks people think about are the double dense 1.44mb ones (however, by the end, you could get 200+mb ones.. they just weren’t really common as this was now the late 90s where people were starting to get into cds for large data storage, or USB memory sticks for more portable stuff. Though these were pretty small at first, but still much bigger then people expected (I think I still got my old 16mb one which was BIG at the time).

Anyway. I also make a comment in the video that I think the missions might just be ported from the board game but it’s not quite like that. The layout of the board is fairly different. I’m not quite sure why this was done but bits kinda keep the same feel. However, the missions are in fact different. There were 12 missions in the original mission Book, with only 10 in the video game and while some are inspired by the board game, some are more so then others. Maybe I’ll do a complete dive but I’m not sure if that’s quite something people are too interested in. Comparing board games different versions? Sure! but Board game to video game version? probably not.

I’m not turning this gaming blog into a video game one.
