Warhammer Quest: Update!
Well, I said I had contacted Gavin Thorpe about the Skaven mission and didn’t expect to hear something, but I have and its great information I think..
So I asked him a couple of questions about the “Domain of Horned Rat” Warhammer Quest mission and this are what replies I got:
First was it originally planned as a expansion pack. To remind you, Warhammer Quest came out in 1995 and mostly in the same year, released 9 ‘Warrior Packs’ (which were new heroes to play as, an were mostly later reused as just figures in Warhammer Fantasy Battle) and 2 Adventure Packs: Catacombes of Terror and Lair of the Orc Lord. A chaos Dwarf one had figures done but that’s all known about that one. The Adventure packs had new floor plans, a rulebook with the Quests in it, some new cards and metal figures.
Anyway. So first asking if it was originally planned for a Skaven Adventure pack or not?
As far as I recall, all the adventures in WD that had floorplans were originally written, or at least planned, to be Adventure Packs.
So that’s great news. We can confirm (kinda) that There was going to be a Skaven Adventure Pack for Warhammer Quest, and the card stock and stuff which came with WD was originally for that. This is also true for some other missions which came in WD.
Domain of the Horned Rat was the most complete of those. The Chaos Dwarf adventure hadn’t progressed as far for they writing but the art had been done. Originally these would have had new miniatures for them, as Adventure Packs, but that wasn’t possible when they were pulled off the schedule (in fact the lack of sculpting time was one of the reasons they ended up being problematic…) so we had to show folks what the non-standard miniatures might look like.
That’s quite interesting as Andy Jones had said that he had an entire Chaos Dwarf expansion. Most likely these were just the figures, but it’s a bit interesting. I’m not sure if they did publish a Chaos Dwarf mission in WD at the time.
the engineer would have been a suggestion for Quirrik.
I personally said that I didn’t think the engineer figure would have been Quirrik cause it didn’t match, but this pretty much confirms that it was intended as a prototype. They might have greatly retooled it or made a new figure but it was one put forward for being him anyway. So yep, I was wrong. Not a total surprise really.
Also, I possible made another mistake, but this one isn’t totally on me (well, the last one wasn’t a mistake, I was more a matter of opinion in leu of facts.) but It showed 2 different kit bash Rat Golems. I had completely misread the caption written for them. The one with the Wheels was by Andy Jones. the Bone Ripper one was Gavin Thorpe.
And finally, The article was created to Gavin Thrope and Friends, so who were the friends?
The Friends were Andy Hall and Ian Pickstock, one of my fellow Assistant Games Developers at the time. There may have been some input from Andy Warwick too, who was mostly Studio IT support but also a keen WQ fan.
So, that’s that dealt with. Big thanks to Gavin Thorpe

Interesting stuff. The chaos dwarf tiles appeared in the special white dwarf scenario in WD 200. Not a Warhammer Quest scenario per se, but it carried part of the game inside a mountain.
Wonder what other expansions they had planned.. the Chaos Dwarf one was known about, and the Skaven figure had been floating around but I don’t think it was confirmed that a Skaven expansion was in the offing. But there were probably a couple more.
